Eskimo went
hunting and grotesquely
fails to see the bears...

As part of a team of six, we worked intensively for several months on this independent and somewhat comical film from the realm of eternal ice and snow. As the title suggests, the main character is an Eskimo.

An Eskimo trudges between glaciers and snow to achieve one thing - to hunt a bear. The trouble, or rather luck for the bears, is that the Eskimo is not so smart. There is no shortage of bears on the open plains, only the Eskimo is so oblivious, or perhaps so clumsy, that he cannot find one. The whole story turns into a tragicomic spiral of events leading to a surprising finale.

The project was framed by director Michal Žabka, who came up with the punchline and the theme. Together with my colleagues we invented various funny plots and situations.

We decided to make the whole film in 3D stereoscopic and high 2 x 2K resolution, which was something special in 2011. It was a job that we enjoyed very much. We each found our own area that we worked on intensively. Peter Harakaly and Vanda Palis were mainly involved in 3D character animation. Honza Kuřimský did visual effects and 3D magic in Houdiny.

Environment design

I did preconception, design development and 3D environment creation. I collaborated with my colleagues on creative ideas and design and connecting to the overall story. Vlastimil Stejskal was compositing everything in Maya 3D, lighting, creating in 3D and preparing for the compositors. Tomas Havelka painted matte paints and textures. Tomáš Snížek then composed everything beautifully thanks to his characteristic name :-). Martin Paleček then seemed to follow us and motivated us to create.

Short film you'll probably never see

The footage was around 5 minutes of 3D stereoscopic animation. The project remained a work in progress and will most likely never be completed due to several reasons (time, finances, other priority projects) and most importantly the later transition of ACE to SPOON, the company moved and our team left the studio. SPOON later went out of business and with it the hope of completing this fun short from the land of eternal ice.
