First Republic
1918 Czechoslovakia
and family series...

Czech Television series FIRST REPUBLIC. Post-production and VFX was done by ACE POST studio. For about 9 months I did intensive alternating work on film locations and matte painting.

PROJECT

A family series set in the historical backdrop of Czechoslovakia between 1918-1945, the period of the so-called "First Republic", when modern Czech statehood was being formed. In this dramatic and unpretentious family television series, the stories of fictional characters are illustrated with historical locations. Thus, there has been quite an extensive creation of settings. The story is set primarily in the capital city of Prague and the Podolí district.

STORY

I worked on the preconception, studying historical documents such as maps and photographs from archives to roughly reconstruct historical sites. I then took several contemporary photographs of these exteriors, which we then refined into their "historical" form in the ACE studio.

Prague - Podolí 1918 / MATTE PAINTING

One of the most difficult scenes for me was the panorama from the historical Prague fortress Vyšehrad. The changes from today's situation were dramatic. Today this part of Prague is much more built up than at the beginning of the twentieth century. I created this location in several variations and seasons (day, night, summer, winter, spring, autumn...).

Comparison with the photo I took in 2013 (from the Vyšehrad viewpoint) / with the final mattepaint I made based on a contemporary photo from 1925.

Taking into account the story and the director's comments, I have reworked some of the realities later and they don't exactly match the actual layout of the time. In the case of the panorama, for example, it was a much smaller industry than shown in the film Some houses are missing and others are present, etc... Otherwise, I was thinking of very small details, such as the floating of wood from the Sumava mountains, etc..

NIGHT
DAY

In addition to matte painting, I worked on small VFX elements and 3D animations that I used to bring the historical environment to life (animations of water, cars, trams, boats, atmosphere, etc...) Below you can see some of the locations and VFX I created.

MATTE PAINTING

The next example shows how I changed the size and environment of one building "Skvor's Villa". Some retouching and scene adjustments can be seen here. Many of the scenes were routine. In this case, our team of VFX artists made retouches or replacements of some objects and panoramas.
